Our shop opened in 2016 with the goal of supplying Middle Tennessee with fresh tempeh. We soon realized that adding more products to our line would allow us to focus solely on local distribution, take advantage of the seasonal nature of locally grown produce, have fun mixing things up in the kitchen week to week, and hopefully give us a shot at a sustainable small business model.
While we thought we would be selling our products primarily in Davidson & Williamson Counties, it quickly became apparent that there was also a demand in Cannon and surrounding counties. We transformed what used to be the restaurant front of the house to be a retail space offering our full line of fermented foods, as well as a local/natural foods grocery store, bakery and coffee shop.
As interest in fermented and locally-sourced foods grows, we are happy to educate our customers about our sourcing practices, fermentation techniques, the importance of seasonal produce, and carbon footprint reducing practices. Short Mountain Cultures is committed to sourcing locally when possible; our vegetables are primarily grown locally, our glass packaging is manufactured near Memphis and the ceramic crocks we use are made in Southern Ohio. We regularly host workshops with fermentation revivalist and Cannon county resident, Sandor Katz. And just generally love chatting with our customers and friends about what’s bubbling away on their counters at home.
